Crafting Is A Holiday Gift With Benefits To Yourself

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Kwanzaa! Once again we are or have been busy running around, wrapping, gifting, shopping, listing, and all sorts of other expended energy for those special people in our lives. Lucky to be able to do this, and of course, luckier that there are people with whom we share the holidays. But the one person who often goes last on the list is YOU!

This year, when all the boxes are opened, the decorations are packed away, and the last of the candles are snuffed out, think about selecting a craft project. If you aren't crafty, perhaps you've always wanted to knit, paint, sew, or needlepoint, it is time to learn. Most crafts offer beginner level projects that are easy to start and finish while you hone the skill for the next level project.

I am putting this post under Health & Wellness because crafting - whatever the outlet - is a way to relax, learn, and slow down time making you feel better. For those of you who craft, you know what I mean. It's a chance to create while working the mind and hands in a therapeutic repetitiveness. This allows you to think on other things that demand quiet perspective. Ask any avid knitter you know, and besides the joy of the finished garment, they become addicted to the process in the best of possible ways.

There is also a sense of accomplishment when the final product is done; or in the case of the rooster, when it is ready to be sent out and stuffed like a turkey sewn into a pillow. I finally finished him after joining a weekly knitting group at a local shop. The ladies there welcomed my rooster and me with open needles and lots of encouragement. Camaraderie abounds in this group of diverse personalities who all share the love of wool, in one form or another. With their guidance, I'm relearning how to crochet and making the only thing I know how to crochet right now to go into Christmas gift bags, "Head bands for when you wash your face at night." (Not bragging but they are really cute, and useful!)

If wool isn't your thing, try painting, pottery work, or even a book club... Which I admit is a bit off the craft idea but at least you are taking time for yourself and using your mind, then sharing the experience with others. The point is that no matter the actual activity, it's about challenging your brain while relaxing to gain more mindfulness, learning to be in the moment, improving hand to eye coordination, making friends in a group, and producing something you put your heart into. Treat yourself to the gift of crafting... These benefits may be the best present you get this year!
